Hoorcollege 1
Responsible organising is about creating multiple types of value simultaneously!
Multiple value creation is complex
System approaches help to understand and manage complexity
Main learning goal: you have to be able to help companies to be responsible
Responsible organisations
One theory to assess if an organization is responsible, use the Stakeholder Theory. Het
bekijkt alle verschillende stakeholders van een organisatie. An organization is embedded in a
broader system, not isolated. It’s not just a profit goal organization.
1 activity can have multiple values, zoals Ryanair, goedkoop vliegen is chill voor mensen,
Alles is interrelated.
,Integrated reporting: it’s a development to invite organizations to be explicit in what type of
value they create and or destroy for different stakeholders.
Let’s look at organizations as entities that creates multiple types of value simultaneously.
And that’s more complex.
Organization is part of a broader system, Integrated reporting:
Het verschil met stakeholder theory is dat er hier wordt gekeken naar capital in plaats van
stakeholders.
You can use system approaches to help organizations to be responsible.
,The system lens
A system is an interconnected set of elements that is coherently organized in a way that
achieves something.
System approach:
-Trying to see the greater whole
-Interrelations
-Feedback: closed chains of causal connections
-Non-linearities, delays
Responsible organizing is about multiple value creation and this is complex, so there are
approaches like the system approach to manage this complexity.
You need to grasp not only the individual systems in an organization, but you need to know
how they interconnect to each other. Otherwise you don’t know how the systems works as a
whole.
A influences themself through other elements!
You try to grasp all the complexity of the system, don’t isolate things!
Basic Building Blocks
Positive/reinforcing feedback loop:
, There is a cause and a consequence, here A is the cause and B the consequence.
Positive relationship = If a goes up, B also goes up. And if A goes down, B also goes down. ‘+’
richting ingaan!! An initial increase (or decrease) wil lead to another increase (or decrease)
Negative / balancing feedback loop:
This loop means: When A goes up, B goes up. When B goes up, C goes down (ofterwel: ze
werken in tegengestelde richting), When C goes up, A goes up (and when C goes down, A
goes down).
Emergence = different behaviour emergence from the way all the elements in the system
are interrelated.
Irreducibility (onreduceerbaarheid) = that behaviour of that system can’t be reduced to the
different elements. You cannot understand the behavior if you only look the elements, you
have to see the interrelations.
Bovenste is positive / reinforcing loop (gaat dus exponentieel omhoog óf omlaag)
