Unit 17 : Assignment A
, There are two main
types of sports injuries:
Acute & Overuse
,Acute Injuries
An acute injury is a sudden and often overwhelming injury In this presentation, we’ll be exploring FIVE acute injuries
that results from some kind of physical activity or trauma. in more detail including aetiology, signs/symptoms and
Acute injuries are typically caused by a sudden recommended treatments:
movement or impact during exercise, sports, or an
accident. They often cause significant loss of function and 1.Joint dislocation
require immediate treatment. 2.Tendon tear
3.Transverse fractures
General signs & symptoms 4.Muscle strains
• Sudden and/or severe pain. 5.Traumatic bursitis
• Swelling.
• Joint or bone that is visibly out of place.
• Inability to put weight on the affected limb.
• Extreme tenderness at the injury site.
• Inability to move the joint as normal.
,Overuse Injuries
An overuse injury results from the cumulative microtrauma In this presentation, we’ll be exploring FIVE acute injuries
caused by repetitive activities that exceed the body's in more detail including aetiology, signs/symptoms and
ability to recover and adapt, leading to gradual onset of recommended treatments:
pain and dysfunction. Young athletes are particularly
suceptible to overuse injuries at periods of growth. 1.Skin blister
2.Stress fracture
General signs & symptoms 3. Apophysitis
• Swelling and tenderness to the touch. 4.Ligament inflammation
• Gradual onset of pain. 5. Bursitis
• Stiffness and difficulty warming up.
• Compensation by other body parts.
• Fatigue in the affected area.
• Absence of direct trauma.
, Mechanisms of Injury (MOI)
MOI refers to the manner in which a physical injury has occurred; it describes how, with what force, and to which part of
the body the energy was applied. Three broad categories of MOI are detailed below:-

Blunt trauma occurs when the body Penetrating trauma when an object Decelerating trauma occurs when a
is subjected to a blunt force, such as breaches the body's surface, such as moving body comes to a sudden stop,
in motor vehicle collisions, falls, and with stab wounds, gunshot wounds, causing shearing forces that can lead
assaults. Blunt trauma can result in or impalement injuries. Penetrating to injuries like aortic dissection or
fractures, lacerations, and internal trauma can cause damage to internal spinal cord injuries
