Risk factors & prevention strategies
17C: investigate risk factors which may contribute to sports injuries and their associated
prevention strategies

Introduction

Write a lead-in paragraph that frames this report. For example: -

Before you can effectively prevent injuries from occurring, you must first identify both the
intrinsic & extrinsic factors that may increase the probability of injury. A sound
understanding of these risk factors should precede implementation of preventative
strategies, if the efficacy of a rehabilitation programme is to be optimized. This report
adopts a research-based approach – which uses the Injury Prevention Model proposed by
Van Tiggelen, Wickes, Stevens, Roosen & Witvrouw (2008) - to help structure the
identification of most relevant risk factors to Rugby players. The Injury Prevention Model
(Van Tiggelen et al, 2008) represents an extension of an earlier four-step model proposed by
van Mechelen, Hlobil & Kemper (1992) - see Figure 1.

Figure 1. Four-step model of injury prevention (van Mechelen et al, 1992)

I have opted to apply the Injury Prevention Model (Van Tiggelen et al, 2008) - see Figure 2 -
because it represents a more modern approach to injury prevention; where compliance level
and risk-taking behavior of the athlete and an assessment of the efficiency & efficacy of
preventative measures are considered. For the intrinsic & extrinsic risk factors outlined in
this report, the following steps were applied:-

(1) Reseach the most common injuries in rugby.
(2) Research the most common causes of these injuries.
(3) Propose preventative measures
(4) Theoretically determine efficacy, efficiency & compliance for preventative measure.
(5) Make a judgement on the effectiveness of PM with advice on reassessment of injury.

, Figure 2. Sequence of prevention of overuse injuries (Van Tiggelen et al, 2008).

Intrinsic risk factors (C.P5: explain how intrinsic risk factors contribute to sports injuries
and how they can be prevented using specific examples; C.M5: assess preventative
measures for intrinsic risk factors selected, using specific examples; C.D3: analyze intrinsic
risk factors which may contribute to sports injuries using the sequence of prevention model)

Write a short (lead-in) paragraph that defines internal risk factors and identifies the FOUR
you have chosen to write about in this report. For example: -

Internal risk factors are defined as those factors internal to the athlete that may predispose
them to injury. The internal risk factors covered in this report are as follows: -

1. Muscular factors
2. Lack of flexibility
3. Individual variables
