, 1. INTRODUCTION
According to the Curriculum and Assessment Statement Policy (2011) for the Foundation Phase,
assessment should take place continuously throughout the year in a planned manner that should be largely
informal, making use of observation and records to keep track of learners progress and holistic well-being.
The main purpose of assessment is to ensure learners meet their developmental milestones and receive
intervention where needed to enhance their growth and prepare them for formal assessment (ECDoE,
2012: 56). The different Life Skills study areas give learners a chance to explore the world around them in a
safe and supported environment, it is therefore important for teachers to closely observe how learners
interact with their environment in order to determine whether learners face any challenges.
