Railway transportation is a critical sector of the transportation industry, but it is vulnerable to
environmental changes, such as climate change. Climate change is having a severe impact on
railway operations globally, and this could lead to significant impacts on the economy and the
environment. In this essay, we will examine the effects of climate change on railroad
operators and the weather and climate factors that affect railroads in different seasons. We
will also make recommendations to develop partnerships among governmental, industry, and
the research community to study the potential impacts of climate variability and change on
transportation systems.
Effects of Climate Change on Railroad Operators:
Climate change is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that can affect railway
operations in various ways. The potential impacts of climate change on railways include
increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as floods, storms, and
heat waves; changes in temperature and precipitation patterns; and sea level rise (Bekker et
al., 2018). These impacts can lead to disruptions and damages to railway infrastructure,
delays and cancellations of train services, and increased maintenance and repair costs (Gao
et al., 2017).
Climate change has several effects on railway operators, including disruptions to railway
infrastructure and operations, increased costs associated with maintenance and repair, and
increased risk of accidents. As temperatures rise, there is a higher risk of track buckling,
which can cause train derailments. Extreme weather events such as floods, storms, and heat
waves can also damage railway infrastructure and cause significant delays. In addition,
changes in precipitation patterns can lead to landslides and soil erosion, which can affect
track stability.
