a) What do you think is the writer’s purpose in this text? Provide two relevant
examples from the text to support your answer.
a. Maya, a civil rights activist shines a light about happiness that occupied the slaves’ hearts after
freedom. They are immigrating and freeing any form of discrimination they underwent as a result of
their blackness as the color meant that they were not equal to the whites who took them as slaves
and so remained inferior. The immigration journey begins and children need shoes to travel on and
with. Slaves were not allowed to own shoes until they gained freedom.
Examples: “… for the first time…the color of our skin was accepted… children need travel shoes”
b) What two possible meanings can be attached to the sentence, ‘The breezes of the
West African night were intimate and shy’? (line 1). Substantiate your answer with
close reference to the text.
b. "The breezes of the West African night were intimate and shy" can have two possible meanings.
It could mean the writer of the story was maybe familiar with night breezes of the West
African night and had a close and personal relationship with them. "Intimate" also means of
a close or personal nature. This meaning is supported by the rest of the text "licking the hair,
sweeping through cotton dresses with unseemly intimacy." More so, it could mean that the
breeze was cold.
It could mean the night breezes hit the writer very gently and lightly. "Intimate" means quite
warm and friendly while "shy" means reserved. Thus, the breezes blew slowly and in a
friendly manner, I would say same way that a lover would touch his partner.
