Chapter 1 Feeding the world
1. Soil fertility: Bodemvruchtbaarheid -> capacity of a soil to provide crops with essential
plant nutrients.
2. Food availability: Beschikbaarheid van voedsel -> the sufficient quantities of food from
appropriate quality provided by domestic production or import including food aid.
3. Domestically grown produce: In eigen land geteelde producten -> products that are
produced and processed in a particular country and not in foreign countries
4. Abundance of food: Overvloed aan eten -> a situation in which there is more than
enough of food
5. A global network of suppliers: Een wereldwijd netwerk van leveranciers -> A virtual
system where persons or company’s that provides things people want or need and
collaborate and do business together from any part of the globe.
6. Shelf label: Plank etiket -> a tool used by retailers to display the price of a specific
product on the shelves
7. Sustainability labels: Duurzaamheidslabels -> logo’s or stamps that are stamped on for
example food products certifying that the product for sale is made in a way that meets
humanity’s needs without damaging the planet.
8. Environmental impacts: Milieu effecten -> the effect that the activities of people and
business have on the environment. Any change to the environment good or bad.
9. Arable and livestock farming: Akkerbouw en veeteelt-> arable farming is the cultivation
of land to produce crops and livestock farming is the management and breeding of
domestic, or farm animals for the purpose of obtaining their meat and products
10. Increased yields: Verhoogde opbrengsten -> to produce or supply more amount of
something positive such as food or profit.
11. Agricultural acreage: Landbouw areaal-> the amount of land used for farming or things
related to farming and is determined by using measurements of acres (43,560 square
feet equals one acre)
12. Recent decades: Recente decennia-> the last periods of ten years
13. Food scarcity: Voedselschaarste-> a situation in which there is a shortage of food
especially within a large geographical area
14. Fodder: Voer -> food that is given to cows, horses and other farm animals
15. Inhabitants: Inwoners -> a person or animal that lives in a particular place
16. To eradicate poverty: Armoede uit te bannen-> to get rid of the condition of being
extremely poor.
17. Prosperity: Welvaart -> the state of being successsfull and having a lot of money
18. Daily nourishment: Dagelijkse voeding-> the amount of food that a person needs per day
to grow and stay healthy
19. Famine: Hongersnood -> a severe shortage of food that effects an entire population,
country or area, resulting from a bad harvest, due to poverty or political factors, causing
illness and death
20. Malnutrition: Ondervoeding -> physical weakness and bad health often caused by food
deficiencies, or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy and/or nutrients.
, 21. Perpetual problems: Eeuwige problemen-> a situation, person or thing that continuing
needs to be dealt with or solved in often in the same way
22. Plagues of locusts: Plagen van sprinkhanen-> large group of insects in hot areas that flies
in large groups and destroys plants and crops
23. Stunted growth: Onvolgroeide groei -> a reduced growth in human development often a
result of poor nutrition or repeated infections
24. Wholemeal bread: Volkorenbrood -> Bread made from flour that contains all natural
features of the grain
25. Wheat: Tarwe -> A plant whose yellowish-brown grain is used for making flour, or the
grain itself/ a cereal grain that yiels a fine white flour mainly used in breads, baked goods
such as cake, crackers, pasta and it’s important in animal feeds
Chapter 2 Food production
1. Livestock farming: Veehouderij -> the management and breeding of farm animals
(sheep, pigs, goats, poultry, rabbits)
2. Pasture: Weiland -> a field covered with grass or plants suitable for animals to eat
Poultry: Gevolgelte -> domestic fowl like chickens, ducks, turkey or geese raised for food
(meat or eggs)
3. Veal: Kalfsvlees -> meat from a calf often used for food
4. To make ends meet: rondkomen -> earn just enough money to live on.
5. Horticultural crops: Tuinbouwgewassen -> cultivation of plants that are grown
commercially on a large scale.
6. Greenhouses: Kassen -> a building with glass walls and roof, used for cultivation and
exhibition of plants under controlled conditions
7. Nurseries: Kwekerijen-> a place where plants or animals are propagated, nourished and
grown to a usable size to sell or transfer elsewhere.
8. Perennial crops: Meerjarige gewassen-> are crops that don’t need to be planted each
year but after harvest they automatically grow back.
9. Rye: Rogge-> a type of grain, the seed of the cereal grass
10. Oats: Haver->a widely cultivated cereal grass, for it’s edible seeds
11. Propagation material: Voortplantingsmateriaal-> are seeds, plants or parts of plants
capable of reproduction or multiplication of plants
12. Desirable traits: Gewenste eigenschappen-> the pleasing characteristics or qualities that
someone or something has
13. Global player: Globale speler-> a company or institution with world-wide presence in
production and/or distribution, or which is recognized as a brand by most consumers
world-wide
14. Annual turnover: Jaarlijkse omzet -> the total sale made by a business in a year
15. The same species: Dezelfde soort-> a group organisms that share genetic heritage and
are able to interbreed
16. Large surpluses: Grote overschotten-> an amount that is a lot more than needed
17. To purchase: Kopen -> to buy something
18. To comply with: Te voldoen -> to act according to order, set of rules or request
19. Rural development: Plattelandsontwikkeling-> the proces of improving the quality of life
and economic well- being of people living in or from the countryside
20. Production exceeds demand: De productie overtreft de vraag-> a situation in which the
amount of a product that have been made is greater than the amount that is needed
