QUESTION 1: ESSAY
THE VALUES, SKILLS, ATTITUDES AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED TO
BE A COMPETENT LANGUAGE TEACHER.
1.1. Introduction:
The skills needed for effective teaching involve more than just expertise in an academic
field. You must be able to interact with people and help them understand a new way of
looking at the world. This is even truer for a language teacher.
The language teacher should keep in mind that they mostly teach a language that is not
the student’s first, or home language. Although there are many different ways to teach
language effectively, competent educators have several qualities in common.
In this essay, we will look at the specific values, skills, attitudes and knowledge that is
needed to teach language effectively.
Values:
The National Curriculum Statement Grades R-12 aims to ensure the children acquire
and apply knowledge and skills that are meaningful to their own lives. This provides the
foundation on which the teacher must build to promote knowledge in local context, while
still being sensitive to global constraints.
Teachers are also mentors and set the example for their students. They must
remember that they teach more than merely theoretical knowledge. They also influence
the behaviour, reactions and thinking of their students. Teachers must respect all socio-
economic backgrounds, race, gender, physical- and intellectual abilities of their diverse
group of students.
The National Curriculum Statement is based on social transformation to ensure equal
educational opportunities for everyone, regardless of race, gender, background,
religion, etc. The teacher must value and respect these aims and uphold all human
rights.
Understanding that South Africa has a very diverse culture and history, it is important to
acknowledge all different cultures and traditions and value all indigenous knowledge
systems.
Teachers must also have strong moral values, since they have such a huge influence
on the forming and development of our youth. They should value integrity, honesty and
respect and act professionally, whilst striving towards credibility, quality and efficiency.
