, ABSTRACT
Africa has long been touted as a potential hub for local and global business, with growth
forecasted. However, this potential has yet to be qualified, and signs of regression are evident.
This proposal posits that scarce attention has been devoted to identifying the undercurrents
thereto – in the main, sustainable development in Africa is not adequately addressed by the
existing literature. Further, sustainable development in Africa exerts an influence that
transcends business, extending to the societal and environmental spheres, justifying a
scrutinous inquisition. A reorientation, accelerating its demonstrable approval in practice, is
offered through marketing sustainable development’s benefits.

The purpose of this proposal, through its exploratory qualitative, phenomenological design, is
to mine the perceptions and views of 75 managers, within the African context, to deepen
understanding of sustainable development across the continent by establishing its most
pertinent issues, and determining how the issues are being dealt with in management practice.
The study is cross-sectional, and the sampling method is that of purposive sampling. In-depth,
face-to-face interviews will extract the perceptions and views of managers. The data will be
examined using conventional content analysis to discharge an outcome that will best realise
the research objectives by disaggregating sustainable development, and elucidating its
transformative effect across the continent.

The potential contributions are: augmenting and evolving the literature with novel and
contemporary perceptions and views, serving as a pre-cursor for other studies to refine related
perceptions and views, marketing to all managers the practical reference to improve their
business prospects, and, uplifting living standards across the continent.

Keywords: Africa, sustainable development, marketing, education, technology, leadership,
managers, qualitative, exploratory, phenomenology, purposive sampling, in-depth interviews,
