1 INTRODUCTION

Dear Student

Welcome to our postgraduate module in Ecosystemic Psychology. We trust that you will find the
module rich and rewarding.

Much of what is covered in this module may be at variance with what you have learnt to date
and may well challenge what seemed certain to you previously. It is our expectation and hope
that this module will take you on a journey of discovery and tap into new ways of thinking. This
module encourages you to develop a critical way of thinking, sensitivity towards others that you
coexist with, and to be reminded of the diversity of worldviews of those around you.

What emerges from this module will depend on the extent to which you place yourself in the
position of a discoverer. You will be required not only to explore the concepts and ideas
described in the prescribed work, but also to discover the world and people around you and
probably the most difficult of all – to explore your own thoughts and ideas about the world and
how you are part of this created reality. We understand that this module can be challenging, and
so it is important for you to read this tutorial letter thoroughly so you can gain a good grasp of
what is expected of you throughout the year. It is also important that you work continuously
throughout the year with the prescribed material, as well as recommended reading sources.
Leaving the work until the last minute will no doubt put you at a disadvantage.

All study material (including this tutorial letter) can be downloaded from myUnisa, and study
related queries can be found in myStudies @Unisa.

1.1 Tools and tips

Below are some useful tools and tips to help you along the way. However, it is your journey
which will be the ultimate teacher of what you gain from this module.
The first tip is to acquire the prescribed book which we regard as an essential tool for this
module. If you are unable to purchase a new copy of the prescribed book, look for second hand
books, or make use of the library copies. Previous editions of the prescribed textbook will also
suffice.
Remember that this module involves a process of learning which will be punctuated by points of
uncertainty and feelings of being lost. We understand that this module may be challenging, and
so we encourage you to work on the module consistently throughout the year. In our
experience, students who wait until the end of the year often struggle to grasp the theory.

Organise yourselves into groups, or communities with other students. The group (ecosystem)
which you form with other students can assist you in going through the module which may be
difficult to navigate on your own. With regard to the above, we suggest that you request a list of
postgraduate students who are doing this module from:

The Registrar
Student Administration and Registration
PO Box 392
UNISA
0003

, You can also use the discussion forums on myUnisa to engage with your peers. The procedure
of forming groups is not compulsory but is highly recommended as an important resource
which will benefit your process of learning.

Check myUnisa regularly for announcements and important updates. This is an important
aspect of your studies at Unisa. The module leader regularly makes updates and posts
announcements with regards to the module.

Unisa has implemented an onscreen marking system since 2013. This allows students to send
and receive assignments online. So, when submitting your assignments, please send them via
myUnisa as a PDF file. When you convert your assignment into a PDF document, please
ensure that it is not a read-only version. Our on-screen marking tools do not work on read-only
documents. In these cases, your assignment will be cancelled and returned to you. If you need
to attach drawings or diagrams, please scan them in with your assignment first, and then send
them as one file. Please do not submit the same assignment twice. Once you have submitted
an assignment, you have an opportunity to resubmit your assignment (for example, if you
submitted the incorrect one). However, the online port closes once the assignment due date has
lapsed and you will not be able to resubmit an assignment. Please ensure that you submit the
correct assignment, with the correct unique assignment number. No assignments will be
accepted via emails. If you were not successful the first time you tried to submit your
assignment, keep trying. Sometimes the online submission portal is slower when high numbers
of students are trying to submit.

Please ensure that you use the correct assignment numbers and unique assignment codes.
Incorrect codes cause significant administrative delays.

We encourage you to become familiar with the latest American Psychological Association (APA)
referencing style. Plagiarism is a serious offence, and all work that has been sourced and cited
must be correctly referenced. Work that is incorrectly referenced or partially referenced will be
penalised. Work that is not referenced AT ALL will be given a mark of 0 and could lead to
disciplinary action can be taken. Please refer to the Students Disciplinary Code and The Policy
on Academic Integrity.

1.2 Tutorial matter
We will communicate with you by means of tutorial letters under the module code PYC4808.
The study material you should receive consists of the following:
