Summary:
Nomhi went to the water’s edge (river) to fetch water. Nzima suddenly appeared,
Nomhi did not expect this. Nomhi scolded him for his playing badly. Nzima was sur-
prised that Nomhi was startled even though they know each other. Nzima jokes
saying Nomhi should go to the doctor because he says she has a heart illness.
Nomhi isn’t happy with this thing. She said she wanted to cry. Nzima replied that
there is no cure (iyeza-medicine) for cowardice (ubugwala). Nzima said he was just
joking.
Nomhi was happy to hear this thing, she asks Nzima to show her that he is truly
joking. He comes closer and kissed her. Nomhi tells Nzima that her is beautiful.
Nzima aks about Nomhi’s plans for next year. Nomhi answers saying that she
wants to go to college because she wants to be a teacher and stand in the front of
class. Nzima agrees with this plan. Nomhi asks about his plans. He also wants to
be a teacher.

Gaba, who is Nzima’s father, sits at the kraal, he is bothered by fleas in
his clothes. He complains a lot and squashes the fleas. He compares
fleas with race horses. Gaza’s wife is MaMntlane, she interrupts while he
is talking and she gives him something cold to drink. She puts a tin down
in front of her husband. Gaba is very happy and he thanks MaMntlane.
MaMntlane is also happy because of the thanks of her husband.
Gaba asks his wife to call Nzima so that he can speak with him. He wants
to speak about the thing they discussed the day before. Again he drinks
the nice beer. Even though the beer is nice, Gaba wants the washing to
be done so that the fleas end, but money is scare in Gaba’s household at
the end of the month.
MaMntlane brings Nzima to speak with Gaba alone. Gaba tells Nzima that
education is important and the inheritance of a person in life. Nzima un-
derstands this thing. Gaba tells Nzima that he cannot work the following
