HCLT 101-1: UNIT 3
Describe the term ‘cloud computing’
• The concept of making on-demand resources on the internet available at any time.
• Resources may include: servers, storage, software, networks and services.
• The cloud is not a single physical entity, but rather a combination of computer resources accessible
on the internet.
Name and describe the four sections on of cloud computing.
• Private cloud: hosting your entire computing infrastructure yourself, this service is not shared with
anyone else.
• Community cloud: This infrastructure is shared between organisations with a common goal.
• Public cloud: The complete IT infrastructure is located in the cloud. This is normally the model used
by companies providing cloud services to others.
• Hybrid cloud: Using both private and public clouds. All the important services are hosted on the
private cloud, while the rest is made available on the public cloud.
Name and describe the different services that the cloud provides.
Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
• Provides computer and hardware as an infrastructure service on the internet.
• The hardware can be utilised in any way that the consumer requires.
• It is common for companies to outsource the physical servers required to run their software to a
cloud service provider and then access these servers remotely.
Software as a service (SaaS)
• Provides fully functional web-based applications to users.
• Instead of installing software on local user computers, the software is hosted on a cloud service.
• Users access the software though a web-based interface.
Platform as a service (PaaS)
• Advanced form of IaaS.
• Provides a platform for companies to develop, test and deploy cloud solutions for specific
applications.
• This provides an isolated environment to facilitate save and uninterrupted development of
software.
Name the advantages that infrastructure as a service offers to maintain a IT infrastructure
• It reduces the cost of ownership.
• The company only pays for the services that they need, not for the whole infrastructure.
• The company has constant access to a variety of high level IT resources and infrastructure.
Name the advantages of using SaaS
• Easily scalable to provide access to growing or shrinking numbers of users.
• Can be accessed from anywhere on the internet.
• The services offered can be customized to suit the need of the user.
, Name the advantages of PaaS
• It provides a common platform for many developers in different locations to work on the same
project.
• Companies no longer need to manage the updating or upgrading infrastructure software. Software
can be developed without the added concern of creating a testing and deployment infrastructure.
Describe the term internet of things (IOT)
The internet of things defines technologies, which are now to use network infrastructures to connect and
interact with other technologies.
Name and describe the elements of IOT
Hardware
• These devices are embedded with sensors and actuators that sense control the physical
environment that they operate in.
• These devices require the functions of a micro-controller or integrated circuit which are
programmed to perform tasks that the device is designed for.
Embedded programming
• The micro controllers are programmed with common programming languages like C, C++ and
JavaScript.
• Due to rapid development, IOT devices, micro controllers are becoming much cheaper to produce
on a larger scale.
Networking and cloud integration
• Connectivity allows devices to connect to each other, to the internet and to the cloud.
• Devices are designed to connect to a standard IP network.
Data processing
• The data generated by the device will depend on the type of device and the purpose of the device.
• Some IOT devices not only transmit data but also receive data from an external source to direct its
behaviour.
Name some examples of IOT implementation in the technological world
• Autonomous cars (Driverless Cars)
• Wearables (wearable tech devices like an apple watch)
• Smart homes
Describe the term Artificial intelligence
• The simulation of an intelligent human process by machines to accomplish functions such as
learning, reasoning and self-correction.
• Computer systems are at the heart of artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence can be separated into two components. Weak IA and Strong AI.
Describe each of these two terms
Weak IA
• Also called Narrow IA
