1. My teaching philosophy

I have always believed that although we are teachers, we should
even be more like a learner than the learners themselves. As the
education industry is always advancing and becoming more
technological, myself as a teacher should also become more
technologically advanced. Although I want to be a History
teacher in the FET phase, it does not mean I can stay behind with
the times. Learners become more technologically - abled and so
should the teacher. I cannot simply lead a class and expect the
learners to sit quietly and listen to what I have to say. We live in an
era where learners become more opinionated and they are
encouraged to stand up for themselves and share their points of
view. Because of this when we teach, it is simply not a one way
communication channel, but rather a two-way street with back
and forth communication between teacher and students. The
reason why I want to teach FET phase students is because of the
mistakes I have made in my past and I would like to share these
experiences with the young “adults” of South Africa so they can
avoid making the same mistakes. History is sometimes seen as a
boring subject and if you as a teacher do not involve the learners
in classroom discussions or research that is what they will
experience. I belief as a History teacher you have to get them
involved and ask their opinions on topics and events. The
education sector in South Africa is under threat of becoming one
of the worst in the world and as a teacher I have the ability to
help solve this trend and get it back up to where it should be. With
many experts leaving South Africa, it is the responsibility of people
in the education sector and shareholders to provide quality
education to enable us to replace these leaving experts. If I had
the opportunity I would change the whole education system, to
one where the focus is on every learner’s individual strength.
Rather than evaluating every learner on the same scale we have
to realize that is not the right way. Each learner has his strength
whether, academically, culturally or athletically and as educators
we should focus on this instead of expecting “the fish to climb a
tree” as Albert Einstein said.
