Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✓ Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
✓ You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
✓ This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
✓ Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
✓ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
✓ Write 300 - 500 words.
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
I looked at Unit 1 of this book. It is clearly structured and clearly states which topics, activities, and
tasks will be covered. It also states how these tasks will be done including independent work, pair
work and group work. This unit is logical and appropriate for advanced level students. The material
in this book is appropriately graded and it gets progressively more difficult at an appropriate
speed. It begins with less complicated tasks that is: vocabulary and speaking followed by reading
and vocabulary then grammar review where it focuses on continuous verb forms, speaking and
moves further to complicated language activities and ends with a writing activity.
The unit offers plenty of practice, recycling and revision. There is a lot of exercises to check the
students understanding on global living. There is no teacher’s guide in this unit, however there are
grammar extension bank and page numbers included in the unit. The unit does offer students
individual exercises. The material is attractively and clearly presented with bright and relevant
pictures. There is a good balance of all four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and
language areas (vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation).
The texts at the appropriate level for the students I am going to teach as they are a mixed
nationality, living or studying in an English-speaking country. Teaching Globalisation to these
students is very appropriate. The vocabulary and speaking activity in this unit includes the
following questions about personal experiences in visiting another country to go shopping, for a
sporting event, to visit a theme park, making online contact with someone from another country,
using English as a lingua franca to communicate with other non-native speakers, working/studying
with someone from another country and travelling abroad to work or study. These experiences
perfectly fit with these students as they are studying English for exactly these reasons.
The material in the unit is culturally appropriate and may not be offensive or inappropriate to the
students. The price of the book is not mentioned therefore, I cannot say for sure that the
school/parents and students can afford the book.
I would use this unit for my students however, I will need to make some adaptations on the
activities to ensure that what I am teaching is right for my students.
