The Meat Palace

For many years, Tony worked as a butcher in the local butchery. When his son, Philip,
completed his BCom Business Management Degree, Tony and Philip decided to open a small
butchery and biltong shop in Port Elizabeth. Tony and Philip are the co-owners and general
managers of the now successful The Meat Palace. They sell various pre-cut and packaged
meat packs, made-to-order meat packs, homemade biltong and, most recently, pre-cooked
meals. Philip wants the store to be structured by formal rules and regulations, using
hierarchical structures to facilitate reporting information. Tony, on the other hand, thought
that the store should have a family-type organisational environment that focused on
consensus building and unity.

Philip is responsible for the procurement, development, compensation, integration, and
maintenance of the employees, while Tony deals with the procurement of the meat and
other resources needed by The Meat Palace to achieve their objectives. Philip believes that
all managerial decisions should be based on quantifiable information and often states, “If it
cannot be measured, it cannot be managed”. As a manager, Philip adopts a democratic style
and shows a high degree of concern for production as well as for his staff.
Tony, on the other hand, believes that there is no single best way to manage and that the
situation will determine which management approach should be used. Tony further believes
that the customers’ requirements should be met at the lowest cost, first time, every time.
As a manager, Tony places a great amount of emphasis on the happiness and satisfaction of
his staff and will usually try to place as little pressure on his employees as possible. In a
team situation, Tony likes to identify people’s skills and abilities and will often share
information and involve his employees in decision making.

Some of the other employees of The Meat Palace include the following:

• Sara and Bongi who prepare the pre-cooked meals. Bongi is an intern who has just started
working for The Meat Palace and reports to Sara, the head chef. Bongi is a solid, reliable
individual who thrives in a steady, little-changing environment.

• Brandon, Mitch, and Dennis are the head butchers at The Meat Palace. Brandon’s section
concentrates specifically on the biltong, Mitch’s section focuses on red meats, and Dennis’s
section focuses specifically on poultry and white meats.

, • Virginia, the sales manager, and Zelda and Chloe, the sales assistants. Virginia is often
described as “one of life’s naggers”. She can be annoying to other team members as she
often turns up and harasses members for work to be completed.

A recent disagreement broke out between Zelda and Chloe regarding the way in which the
day’s sales should be cashed up. Virginia believed that conflict in the workplace was harmful
and should be avoided at all costs, as it could lead to hostility, aggression, or higher levels of
absenteeism. Tony, on the other hand, believed that conflict in the workplace should be
encouraged, as it is important for effective performance. They agreed that they would look
into the situation in order to find a suitable solution.

Quantitative management
The quantitative management theory deals with mathematical and statistical models and
the use of these models in decision-making. The theory is primarily about crunching the

decisions by managers should be based on quantifiable information.

2. According to the case study, which two contemporary approaches to management does
Tony believe in?

1 Systems approach and a learning organisation
