, Why is Curriculum Change
necessary?
- To steer away from the apartheid ideology and towards EQUAL and DESEGREGATED education
- To identify previously marginalized cultures and becoming aware of MULTICULTURALISM
- To use of education as a driving force for DEMOCRATIC political agendas
- To understand GLOBALIZATION and international benchmark
- To meet the needs of all South African and to DECENTRALISE political agenda’s
(Booyse, et al., 2011).
- EQUAL: Racial divides created during the apartheid drove the education
system to segregate learning areas. Educational reform was necessary to
void the apartheid ideology and increase social awareness and equality for
all learners no matter their race (Booyse, et al., 2011:281).
- DESEGREGATED & MULTICULTURALISM: The move from separate
cultures to integrate cultures is essential in education. We learn best from
diverse situations. Desegregated educational institutions is essential in
progressive transformation to create social cohesion and eliminate
discrimination (Booyse, et al., 2011:281).
- DEMOCRATIC: As South Africa moves from apartheid to democracy,
educational institutions could drive the values of collaboration, cohesion and
integration into the curriculum as a positive reinforcement for change
(Booyse, et al., 2011).
- GLOBALIZATION: The world is constantly evolving and education systems
need to keep up with change. Educational expansion, international
economic growth and other societal goals need to be taking into account
when curricula are drawn up for the purpose of preparing learners for the
real world (Booyse, et al., 2011:282).

, - DECENTRALISATION: Political agenda’s should only be apart of
educational reform if it’s positive and providing an improvement to the
system. In 1994 it was evident that reorganization of ideologies and social
groups to create a democratic and fair country for all (Booyse, et al.,
2011:281).
