Needy:- ‘I need kindness now’- Scene 11 – At this point, Blanche is talking and confiding
in Mitch, as she is desperate, for a lover, protector.
Domineering:- ‘’
Vulnerable:- ‘Her appearance is incongruous to the setting...daintily dressed in a white
suit with a fluffy bodice’- Scene 1 – When Blanche arrives in New Orleans (Stella and
Stanley’s apartment) she clearly looks out of place. Her wearing white symbolises her
fragility and innocence.
Flirty:- ‘Playfully sprays him...He seizes the atomizer’-Scene 2 – Blanche attempts to flirt
with Stanley, however he doesn’t fall for it/ reciprocate it.
On the one hand Confessional:- ‘Myself, myself for being such a liar’-Scene 5 – Blanche
confessing that she knows she is a liar and its wrong, yet she continues to act as a fool.
On the other hand a Performer:- ‘At first Blanche declares that all three men made up
the stories out of revenge...’ – Scene 9 – Mitch tries to get the truth out of Blanche, however
she keeps us the melodramatic performance, even though she has already been exposed.

Blanche just wants the protection and security of a man in her life

Other times she is very honest about her manipulation of reality:- ‘’ – Scene -
Blanche lives in a Fantasy World: Blanche Dubois lives in a make believe world as she
tries to constantly escape reality through alcoholism and illusions, which she uses as a coping
mechanism. She is very comfortable in the fantastical world she has pictured herself in.
Blanche doesn’t ‘want realism’ as she is afraid of the threats and struggles life hurls at her.
Blanche portrays herself as a young and flirtatious southern belle, however that part of her
has clearly faded and she can’t keep using that act to ‘pull any wool over this boy’s eyes’ as
Stanley says.
