1. INTRODUCTION
The CHE1502 module: General Chemistry 1B is a semester module and is offered during
each of the January-June and July-December semesters of the academic year.
The following tutorial letters will be distributed to each student registered for the CHE1502
module for the 2020 academic year:
Tutorial Letter 101 for the CHE1502 module
Study Guide for the CHE1502 module
Tutorial Letter 301 for the CHE1503 module, which will provide information about the
laboratory work at first year Chemistry levele
Tutorial Letters in the 200 series, which will provide feedback to students on the
content of a particular assignment. Tutorial Letters in the 200 series will only be
forwarded to students after the due dates of the relevant assignments
The system used for numbering of tutorial letters is explained in the brochure: ”Study @
UNISA” furnished on registration.
Some tutorial matter may not be available upon registration. Hard copies of the
outstanding tutorial matter will be forwarded to each registered student, when available.
Meanwhile, all tutorial matter for the CHE1502 module can be obtained electronically on
the myUnisa learning management system.

, 2. PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES OF THE CHE1502 MODULE
2.1 Purpose
The syllabus for the CHE502 module is set out in the University Calendar. The CHE502 module
is a semester module and is offered during the January-June and July-December semesters
of the academic year.
In addition to the CHE1501 and CHE1503 modules, the CHE1502 module is a compulsory
module for the first year level course in Chemistry, which forms part of the BSc degree in
Chemistry at UNISA.
The CHE502 module deals with ORGANIC CHEMISTRY at first year university level and will
provide the undergraduate student with a comprehensive and practical overview of the principles
and concepts in Organic Chemistry. The content of the work covers basic concepts and
fundamentals of organic chemistry such as the structure, nomenclature, properties, bonding,
isomerism and stereochemistry of organic compounds, synthesis and reactions of the following
organic compounds: alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkene, alkynes, alkyl halides, amines, alcohols,
phenols, ethers, epoxides, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, acid halides, acid anhydrides,
esters and amides.
2.2 Outcomes
The following topics form part of the content of CHE1502 module: GENERAL CHEMISTRY 1B
Fundamental Concepts in Organic Chemistry: Hybridization states of carbon: sp3,
sp2, sp; formation of bonds; bond polarity; dipole moments; intermolecular forces
such as London dispersion forces and van der Waals forces; dipole-dipole
interactions; hydrogen bonding; polarity effects on solubility; bond formation and
bond breakage (homolytic and heterolytic bond breakage); Lewis structures and
formal charges; resonance structures; inductive effect; delocalization of electrons;
electrophiles, nucleophiles and free radicals; Lewis acids and bases.
