Alliterasie (Alliteration) Dieselfde consonant word kort na mekaar in
dieselfde versreël herhaal, bv. “en pulp en plet…”
The same consonant is repeated often in the same
line,
e.g., “en pulp en plet…”

Assimilasie (Assimilation) Samesmelting van twee woorde wat dan as een
uitgespreek word,
bv. hier die uitgespreek as hierie.
Combination of two words pronounced as one
word,
e.g., hier die pronounced as hierie.

Assonansie (Assonance) Dieselde vokaal word kort na mekaar in dieselfde
versreël herhaal,
Bv. “Meulens saag en maal”.
The same vowel is repeated often in the same line,
e.g., “Meulens saag en maal”.

Atmosfeer (Atmosphere) Die gevoel wat die leser kry as wanneer hulle die
gedig lees,
bv. hartseer, gelukking, ernstig.
The feeling the reader gets when reading the poem,
e.g. sadness, happiness, sincerity.

Ballade (Ballad) ‘n Digvorm met sy eie spesifieke kenmerke,
veral ‘n refrain.
A form of poetry with its own qualities, especially a
refrain.

Beeldspraak (Metaphorical Language) Wanneer ons ‘n prentjie of beeld gebruik om iets
anders baie beter te verduidelik.
When we use a picture or image to explain
something else.

maniere onder die leser se aandag gebring, bv.
alleenplasing, ens.
An important word is brought to the attention of the
reader in different ways.

Boodskap (Message) Die idee of gedagte wat die digter aan die leser gee
om oor na te dink.
The idea or thought the poet gives to the reader to
make them think about it.

Elisie (Elision) Wanneer 'n klank of klanke uit'n woord weggelaat
is,
bv. Hy't in plaas van hy het.
When letters are intentionally left out of a word,
e.g. he’d instead of he had.

Ellips (Elipses) Woorde wat weggelaat is en word dan met drie
punte/stippels gewys.
Words left out and it is shown by three dots to
indicate suspense.

Enjambement (Enjambment) Een versreël gaan oor in die ander een sonder
enige leestekens.
One line flows into the next line without any
punctuation.

Eufemisme (Euphemism) Die woord of idee word sag gemaak om nie mense
se gevoelens seer te maak nie.
b.v. “hy het die lepel in die dak gesteek” in plaas
van sê dat hy gesterf het.
The word or idea is made soft not to hurt the
feelings of others.
e.g., “he kicked the bucket” instead of saying he
died.

Geïmpliseerde taal (Implied language) Wanneer iets nie direk gesê word nie, maar die
leser moet hulle eie afleidings maak.
When something is not said directly, but the reader
has to make their own assumptions.

Haikoe (Haiku) 'n Gedig bestaande uit 3 versreëls en 17
lettergrepe.
Lettergrepe is soos volg:
Reël 1 - 5 lettergrepe;
reël 2 – 7 lettergrepe
en reel 3 – 5 lettergrepe.
A poem consisting of 3 lines with 17 syllables.
Syllables are as follows:
Line 1 has 5 syllables; line 2 has 7 syllables and line
3 has 5 syllables.
