Exploring Business

Unit 1
D1 Evaluate the reason for the success of two contrasting businesses, reflecting on evidence
gathered.

A1 Features of the businesses
The differences between Nike and CAFOD is, Nike is a private sector company (The
organisation is not owned by public or government but by an owner itself) and CAFOD is a
public sector (The Public Sector is usually comprised of organisations that are owned and
operated by the government and exist to provide services for its citizens). Nike is a business
that wants and makes profit for its business and owners however CAFOD is a not for profit
sector meaning the organisations do not earn profits for its owners, all of the money earned or
donated to a not-for-profit organisation is used in pursuing the organisation aims and objectives
and keeping it running. Nike sells products such as clothes, shoes and equipment where
CAFOD don’t sell products they provide services to people in need. Nike has student
discounts and vouchers for their customers where CAFOD don’t have any sort of discounts or
benefits for their employees or volunteers.

The similarities for Nike and CAFOD are they both are well maintained and are able to meet
their aims and objectives successfully. Both the businesses use money they earn for the business
to pay their employees and invest it in their products or jobs. Both the businesses are
international companies and they both receive worldwide profits or donations which help their
business to be successful by achieving their aims and objectives.

The Reason why Nike is successful is because Nike is good at a lot of things, manufacturing
good quality shoes, supplying equipment and gear for many professional and collegiate athletic
teams, which gives them more advertising and helps them make a huge profit due to the
awareness that has been created. However, CAFOD don’t sell products but they are still able
to create awareness through social media, celebrities helping their organisation and through
schools they are able to reach the young children and their parents which are willing to help

, and create awareness for their organisation and the issues in society. Nike truly excels in its
marketing; nobody does branding like Nike. Nike has a high revenue and therefore it earns a
high profit. Due to the high profit Nike has become a successful business because they are able
to invest in new ideas which would help them meet their aims and objectives. The huge variety
of products Nike sells help people find what they need and it is easier for them to purchase due
to their fast service which increases their revenue. They also have a good technology system
which makes shopping fun and easy. Furthermore, the Nike brand has a unique and interesting
design which interests the audience making them want to buy the product. As Nike is creating
an identity for itself, it is now collaborating with Apple which is also a highly profitable company
therefore it means Nike will be earning more than it used to which would increase their
revenue and profits. Secondly, by offering more products to more people, in more markets
than any other sports company, they are able to earn a greater market share of the market
than any other company. Like most leaders in the market, Nike values the consumer and the
importance of providing a quality product. Nike is successful as it is a global market and
therefore they receive worldwide profits of £804.70 million allowing them to meet their aims
and objectives. CAFOD is also an international company like NIKE which allows them to
receive worldwide funds which are then used to meet their aims and objectives. Nike has
different types of products so it can suit the customers needs allowing them to adapt their
products. CAFOD has a good system and good ideas in which people are interested to invest in
and are able to adapt to the idea of helping people in need. The reason for Nike’s success is
their unique and useful selling products which allows them to gain more consumers as they are
affordable and good quality which attracts consumers leading to higher purchases which then
leads to high revenue and profit. Moreover, Nike services allow consumers to design their own
shoes; this would interest their audience as they are able to develop their own style and
therefore persuades them into buying more goods leading them to become a successful
business and this would also allow them to increase premium prices. Furthermore, CAFOD are
able to meet their aims and objectives as they have unique and helpful project ideas which
interest the society and therefore make people interested in helping the organisation by
donating money, supplies and supporting them by getting involved in helping physically as
volunteers. Overall the most important success for is CAFOD, it is able to receive worldwide
funds and volunteers. This allows them to help people in need successfully. Due to CAFOD
there have been many improvements in society and many lives were saved which meets their
aims and objectives, making them a successful business.

The most important reason for success for Nike is that Nike sell good quality products such as
clothes, shoes and equipment which is affordable for customers leading to a greater spending by
customers resulting in higher revenue and also customer’s loyalty therefore customers would
choose Nike instead of other rivals such as Adidas. This would allow Nike to break even
quicker and receive higher profits resulting in Nike to invest in their products and introducing
