In this essay, the problem of a new child in my class coming from a different province, with different
cultural norms, will be addressed by applying my knowledge of an appropriate educational philosophy. I
will apply my knowledge of African Philosophy to address the problem of successfully integrating the
child in the classroom. I will be using African Philosophy because it is the most appropriate philosophy
seeing that it entails using responding to problems and challenges faced by Africans in an African way.
African philosophy is also used to reverse subjection and to ensure that all citizens know what it means
to be African and more than that, to be proud of being African. Mainly, this philosophy will be used to
ensure that the new child feels comfortable in the strange environment and that the environment will
soon feel like home.
Content
African philosophy is essentially a form of Existentialism. This philosophy stresses the importance of
human community and the community’s place in the universe and claims that happiness, at least
partially, consist of living for others. This philosophy challenges the arrogance of the West and asks it to
rethink its claim on cultural spirituality and is rooted in spoken tradition.
Another important component of African Philosophy is community. Community is the center of life and
a sophisticated community is defined as an ever-expanding net of spiritual, psychological, biological nd
emotional relations. African traditional thought asks the following questions :
How should we understand the universe?
Who and what is God?
Who is my neighbor?
What is my duty to my community?
How should my community be governed and led?
When answering the question “what does it mean to say that I am African?” Ubuntuism is a very
important concept to keep in mind. The word Ubuntu shortly means that ‘I am because we are’ and is
related to human happiness, well-being and humanity. Ubuntu describes a sense of unity between
people through which we each discover our own strengths and virtues.
I will now apply the concepts of African Philosophy to solve the issue of the new learner who came to
the school from another province and doesn’t have any friends. I will address this issue in general as the
behavior of the whole class will change the situation.
