You have been appointed as a school principal and you are eager to
encourage parents to participate in school activities. Choose five Schurr
(1992) suggestions that could work in your environment and explain why you
think they could work.
1. Ask parents to share their stories or feelings about personal health
issues.
• A lot of parents have experienced health issues, or they have witnessed
family members going through health issues. Invite a few parents that have
been through this experience.
• Ask one or two parents to share their experience with other parents by having
an information session where parents can share their stories.
• This will help different parents to get to know other people’s stories and it
could also encourage learners to speak about their experiences with other
learners once they see that their parents are talking to other parents about it.
2. Establish a school parent centre which can supply resources and serve
as a meeting place for staff and parents
• The school hall or reception hall at the school can be used as a resource
centre.
• Teacher and parent meetings can be held to discuss learner’s achievements
and when learners are struggling with school activities this is a very good way
to keep the parents involved in the teaching process.
• Resources can be made available to parents whose children are struggling
and teachers can implement and think of creative ways where the parents can
assist their children in creative ways to keep the learning process fun and
interesting.
3. Encourage school and community interaction through activities, such
as displays in shopping areas, in which parents, learners and teachers
are involved.
• Communities can get involved with school activities.
• The school can arrange with the owner of the shopping centre to keep the
fundraisers there for free of charge.
• Fundraisers can be held at shopping centres and shops.
• Learners can get creative by making posters that will also be used to attract
attention.

4. Create and disseminate a booklet of tips and guidelines for parents.
• The school can provide a booklet for each parent.
• These booklet/leaflet will contain guidelines and tips on how to keep your
learners interested and interactive in schooling activities.
• The booklet can contain pictures which will make it interesting and attract they
parents’ attention.
5. Arrange weekend or evening information sessions so that parents know
how to become involved in the school.
• By having information sessions for parents will be the perfect way for parents
to become involved with school activities.
• Parents can become the school management by becoming a governing body
participant.
• Parents will then help to manage and make important decisions about
management and learner/teacher activities.
6. Arrange for two to three parent-teacher contact sessions throughout the
year.
• By arranging teacher and parent sessions the parents can get to know the
learners’ teachers.
• Parents whose learners that are struggling with school activities can get more
involved.
• Parents can be informed on how to deal and help learners who are struggling
with schoolwork.
• Teachers and parents can work together to help the learners achieve their
goals.
7. Publish a monthly parent newsletter.
• By publishing a school newsletter, it will keep the parents up to date about the
activities that happened the past month.
• It is also a very useful tool to keep the parents updated on what to expect in
the upcoming month.
• By adding photos to the newsletter of learners’ achievements would also keep
the parents interested and involved.
