DEMAIN – Robert Desnos
Poem

Translation

Aged 100 000 years, I would still have the strength
To wait for you, oh tomorrow, foreshadowed by hope.
Time, (an) old man, suffering from many aches and pains
Can groan : The morning is new, new is the evening.

But for too many months we have been living watchfully.
We watch, we keep the fire and the light (going),
We speak in hushed voices and we keep our ears straining (alert)
For many noises quickly silenced (put out) and lost as at play.

Now in the depths of the night we still bear witness
To the splendour of the day and all those present.
If we don’t sleep, it is to watch for the dawn
Which will prove that finally we live in the present.
