a. Exchanging of pleasantries with a potential client is important as it could
assist in calming a client who arrived at your office anxious/ in distress/
upset. It also communicates to the client that you have good manners and
creates a good first impression of you. It also assists in making you more
relatable and appear trustworthy, to the client.


b. There are various important reasons that a lawyer needs to maintain a
chronological account of facts when interviewing a client. These are:
 It gives a courtroom perspective to the matter. In court, evidence
is presented in chronological order from start to finish.
 Witnesses recount events easier if they are in sequence.
 It leads to a higher level of accuracy and completeness.
 When facts are arranged chronologically they are easier to
understand and the importance of individual events, in the bigger
scheme of things, becomes clearer.
 When facts are set out in chronological order, additional legal
theories can open up, which might not have been clear at the start.
 It’s the most efficient way to organise facts, which would in any
event have to be organised as such when preparing a discovery
affidavit, witness statement, etc. 1
