IntroductionHugo de Groot’s (1535-1645) work should be viewed in terms of the
history of violence and religious war was significant. His most important
work for this essay’s purpose is De iure belli ac pacis (on the law of war
and peace) and his introduction to Prolegomena, which was a conscious
attempt to reconcile the conflicting political and ecclesiastic trends of his
time.
