The Essay
The Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution were policies put in place by Mao Zedong
in an attempt to advance the Peoples Republic of China. However, these plans were
unsuccessful and did not contribute to advancing the Country. Mao had gained confidence
from the success of previous policies but the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution
did not produce the outputs intended leading to massive economic loss.


Mao’s first Five-year plan was to increase industrial output which was a success as the output
more than doubled. The success of this plan gave Mao the confidence to accelerate industrial
growth. Mao also benefited from the 100 Flowers Campaign. This Campaign encouraged
intellectuals to voice their opinions and concerns about the country. There was an unexpected
amount of criticism of both the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Mao which the
government responded to by persecuting those critical of the CCP and Mao. This reaction
showed the people how the government responded to criticism as well as got rid of those
against communism allowing Mao to put further policies in place.

As a result of the success of the First Five-year plan Mao put in place the Great Leap forward
in 1958. This was an ambitious plan to modernize China in only one generation in order to
increase agricultural and industrial output and have an equal and better economy than
