SUSTAINABLE LIVING 771
Excursion Assignment

, ASSIGNMENT 3: DEGRADATION OF THE MILNERTON LAGOON AS A CASE
STUDY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING

Field trips can be categorised as experiential or investigative teaching methods for enabling
environmental learning in context. In this assignment you are required to design and plan an
EE learning unit based on the use of excursions as a teaching and learning “tool” for a specific
subject (one of your curriculum studies). You need to use the Milnerton lagoon case study texts
provided as the context for the learning activity and chapters 5 and 6 of the EE book (provided)
as a resource for teaching approaches and activities that you feel will ensure meaningful
environmental learning during such an excursion process.

Hurley (2006) describes different phases of a field trip and links different activities to such a
learning activity. Using this perspective on field trips and teaching methods described in chapter
6 plan a field trip which shows teaching methods you will be using to enable meaningful
environmental learning in a context described in the text on the Milnerton lagoon.

The activity should clearly reflect the following:

Specific grade and subject (2)
Specific aims (2) for the subject you will be working towards achieving according to the
CAPS document (4)
An environmental issue on which you will focus (4)
The dimension of the environment your issue in this case study can be located in (4)

Topic / issue, teaching methods, learner activities for each excursion stage

o Pre excursion teaching and learning activity (12)

o During excursion teaching and learning activity (12)

o Post excursion teaching and learning activity and opportunity for application

(12)
Total 50 marks
A template is provided for the lesson details. Use these to illustrate your teaching and learning
plan. Teaching methods from the various categories listed on page 116 in chapter 6 may be
used in your phases of the excursion discussion.
