Question 1:

If 3 Statistics books are selected from 6 different Statistics books and 2 Science books are
chosen from 5 different Science books, how many ways can the five books be arranged on a
shelf:

a) If there are no restrictions on how the books can be arranged?
b) If the Statistics and Science books alternate?
c) If a Statistics book is at the beginning of the shelf and a Science book is in the middle
of the shelf.

Question 2:

A certain medical test will return either a positive or a negative result. A positive result is
meant to indicate that the person who took the test has a particular rare disease, and a
negative result is meant to indicate that the person who took the test does not have the
disease. However, this test sometimes returns an incorrect result such that 30 in 1000 of
people who do not have the disease test positive and 55 in 1000 of people who have the
disease test negative. If 93 people in 1000 have the disease, calculate the probability that:

a) A person who tests negative has the disease.
b) A person who tests positive does not have the disease.
c) A test reports a positive reading.

Question 3:

There are nine diplomats, 4 from Kenya and 5 from South Africa including a head diplomat
who is part of each country’s diplomatic group (i.e., Kenya has 3 diplomats plus a head, and
South Africa has 4 diplomats plus a head).

a) If we were to set up a trade delegation with 3 diplomats from each country including
the head diplomat from each country, how many ways could we do this?

b) Alternatively, how many trade delegations can we construct comprising of 7 diplomats
with both heads but no restriction on minimum numbers from each country (other
than the fact that the head diplomat from each country must be included)?

c) How many ways can one of the trade delegations, selected in b) above, line up for a
photo if the South African head diplomat insists on being in the middle?
