Analyse Life of PI-Direct or explicit characterization
Pi tells the story, he talks about himself and what he has been through.
He says he believes in different religions. He is a Christian, Muslim and Hindu.
He also talks about how he grew up, how he is a really honest person and how he acts when he’s in
danger.
These are 4 different examples of direct characterization.

The story got 3 parts. `
1. Pi’s youth
2. The sinking of the ship and how he survives
3. Interview with journalists
In part 1 I noticed how Pi is very intelligent, he describes the lives of different animals from the zoo in
a very specific way. This really shows that he is a smart kid. In part 3 it’s very obvious that Pi gets
annoyed by the journalists. They don’t believe his story and Pi is being stubborn and he gets mad at
them. They want to hear some other story that seems real, but Pi tells the same story again and
again.
This shows how stubborn he is.
Even though Pi is in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger (part 2), he doesn’t show he’s scared and he tries
his best to stay alive. You can tell he is very ambitious.
Pi is also willing to change to stay alive, this is shown in the part where he starts eating turtles and
fish, at first he absolutely didn’t want that.
These are 4 different examples of indirect characterization.
Character Development
In the beginning of the story you hear about Pi’s youth and how he grew up with his parents running
a zoo. You Immediately notice how smart he is. Pi loves animals, he knows everything about them.
He describes how the animals shouldn’t be set free because they are not used to living in the wild.
At school he is getting bullied because of his real name, Piscine. As soon as he goes to another school
he makes everyone call him Pi.
He grew up as a Hindu, but he learns about Jesus Christ and about Allah. He wants to be a Chirstian,
Hindu and Muslim. His parents give in, and are okay with that.
When the family travels to Canada to live there, they take all the animals with them. The Tsimtsum
(the ship) sank, and Pi was the only human survivor.
He was on the lifeboat with Orange Juice the orangutan, a hyena, a zebra and Richard Parker the
Tiger.
Pi has certain things he doesn’t want to eat because of his religions. He refuses to eat the animals on
board of the lifeboat, that goes against his principles.
The hyena kills Orange Juice and the Zebra. Pi finds it disgusting to see.
Later on in the story Pi is alone with Richard Parker on the lifeboat. The food reservoir got empty so
Pi has to kill animals for food.
