SECTION A: BEING A PROFESSIONAL TEACHER

ACTIVITY 1: ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A TEACHER
In BPT1501 and TAM2601, we learn that teachers have various roles and responsibilities as
leader, manager, professional etc. These roles allow them to create conducive environments for
teaching and learning, deal with the challenges associated with the curriculum and the learning
process as well as perform other administrative tasks. It is therefore important to recognise
these roles in practice as well as how teachers implement them in order to learn what works
best. Observe all your mentor teachers throughout your teaching practice and identify at least
three roles or responsibilities that you feel were executed well, and explain how he/she
approached these in order to fulfil their duty as a teacher.

Role / Responsibility 1: Scholar, researcher and lifelong learner………………………………… (1)
Explanation: My mentor teacher has done a great job of introducing innovative teaching techniques
as well as adapting to the changing times by attending classes to learn how to use technology in her
classroom. (2)

Role / Responsibility 2: Assessor ............................................................................................ (1)
Explanation: My mentor teacher effectively demonstrated the role of an assessor in her classroom by
utilizing various assessments to evaluate and assess her students' work to determine whether they
fulfilled the set goals and providing feedback on students' assessment results to both the students
and their parents. (2)

Role / Responsibility 3: Leader, administrator and manager ................................................ (1)
Explanation: My mentor teacher demonstrated good leadership skills by guiding her students
through the activities of the day and exhibiting qualities that make her an excellent role model for her
students. The teacher also demonstrated the ability to effectively manage discipline in her classroom
while demonstrating compassion and authority.
(2)

, ACTIVITY 2: ADMINISTRATION

Observe your mentor teacher throughout your 5 weeks teaching practice and list the
various administrative tasks he/she needs to carry out i.e., registration, assessing,
planning, filing of lesson plans, permissions slips, compiling communication to parents,
filling in maintenance request forms etc.

- Register

- Permissions slips (when the firefighters come, spelling Olympiad)

- Assessing (formative assessing)

- Planning

- Lesson plans

- Compiling communication to parents (whats’s app groups)

- Filling

(4)

ACTIVITY 3: ASSESSMENTS (12)

In the 5 weeks of your teaching practice, take note of what sort of assessments your mentor
teacher relies on to evaluate his/her learners. Keep in mind the two types of assessment;
formative (assessment for learning) and summative (assessment of learning) as well as the
different types such as observations, anecdotal notes, tests, portfolios, presentations,
projects, discussions, quizzes, homework activities etc. List and describe 4 different types
ofassessments used.

Assessment 1: Formal assessment (projects) ....................................................................... (1)
Explanation:
The teacher assigned students a life skills art project in which they were required to design a pop-up
street safety poster. The project was graded as 10% contribution to the student’s overall term grade.
(2)

Assessment 2: Formal assessment (Listing comprehension) ................................................ (1)
Explanation:
The teacher read the story "Chuck the truck" to her students. After the story was finished, the teacher
handed out a work sheet with multiple questions on it. The students were required to answer the
questions about the story. The activity was graded to contribute 5% of the student's overall term
grade for HL English. (2)
