Option B
Critically compare Nkombe and Smet’s classification of African philosophy with
Oruka’s four trends in African philosophy.
Introduction
African philosophy has been classified by various scholars into different categories, with
the aim of providing a clear framework for understanding African philosophical thought. Two
well-known classifications are Nkombe and Smet's classification (Nkombe & Smet, 1978)
and Oruka's four trends in African philosophy (Oruka, 1978). Nkombe and Smet's
classification is based on the socio-political context in which African philosophy is produced,
while Oruka's classification is based on the philosophical orientation of the thinkers.
