Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
Write 300 - 500 words.
I feel the material is clearly structured and the order in which language items are presented is
appropriate and logical. Unit 01 has relevant, engaging and attractive pictures. At the beginning of
Units, the summary of aims and how they will be fulfilled and at the end, a summary of what
students will be able to achieve as a result of completion are very beneficial. There is therefore a
good balance of all four skills and language areas.
The language of the material is largely well graded. The topics covered are inoffensive. They are
relevant, important and affect everyone across nations and cultures and therefore likely to keep
students focused and interested.
I would use this course book for the reasons mentioned above. I like the fact that, judging from
Unit 01, there are different interesting activities (e.g. speaking and writing exercises, word-webs).
Students also have adequate amount of practice reading which includes scanning for information.
There are a lot of group/pairing exercises which are the most effective ways to improve speaking
and listening skills and to practice as well as gain new vocabulary.
The reading and listening texts in Unit 01 are not only interesting, they are also authentic. I also
like the fact that some speaking and listening exercises are designed to indirectly engage in
elicitation and concept checking; for instance under the heading Globalisation, exercises such as
1,3,4, 5 and 6 are designed to illicit responses while checking that students understand what
globalisation is and its impact in society.
There is also scope for me as a teacher to add my own exercises. Listening exercises also include
pronunciation (word stress and intonation) exercises. However it would have been good to include
in Unit 01, some written examples of how stresses/ rise and fall intonations in pronunciations differ
in different English accents. As a teacher I would research to find some examples. While the
grammar per unit does not appear to be that much, there are the Grammar extension bank pages I
can refer to in order to add more exercises or incorporate my own. I would also incorporate
speaking activities in order to check students’ pronunciation and include tests at the end of each
unit. (500 words)
