, Dear Student
As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that UNISA has implemented a
transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this charter,
we have also placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your information,
curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the
pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and
learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their
principles will be integrated at both the programme and module levels, as a phased-in
approach. You will notice the implementation thereof in your modules, and we encourage you to
fully embrace these changes during your studies at UNISA.
1 INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE
A warm welcome to the semester module APY1501. We are committed to support you in
achieving the best possible results for this module. Although you will be one of approximately 2
500 students, we are interested in you as an individual, as well as in your progress and
problems. We hope that you will enjoy the study material which we have developed for you and
that your engagement with it and all those involved will empower and enable you to apply what
you have learnt in any place where you may live or work. From experience we know that the
most effective incentive for consistent study is the satisfaction one derives from a subject in
which one is really interested.
APY1501 is a blended module, and as such, you will need to use myUnisa to study and
complete the learning activities for this course. It is our wish that you will benefit from working in
an online environment and engaging with your fellow students. We want to encourage you to
ask questions and to take part in the discussions. Get to know your fellow students, have
meaningful conversations with them and your e-tutors (see 1.6 below) and learn as much as
you possibly can.
A glance at the contents page of this tutorial letter will show you that this is a very important
tutorial letter, which should be kept in a safe place and referred to regularly. This tutorial
letter contains information about the assessments that you will be required to complete this
