Pre-Lab Questions:

1. Research the process of erythropoiesis, and explain the role erythropoietin plays. Why is this
a popular “doping” drug for athletes?
Erythropoiesis is the production of blood cells, which carry oxygen. Athletes inject it to increase the
amount of oxygen in their blood thus increasing their aerobic capacity. If too many are injected it can
lead to the blood thickening, clotting and heart attack/stroke.
2. How would the hemoglobin content differ in a person living in Philadelphia (Elevation: 39
feet) compared to someone living in Denver (Elevation: 5280 feet)? Why?
The amount of hemoglobin in blood increases at higher elevations, so yes the content for someone in
Denver would be different than someone living in Philadelphia. This is due to the pressure difference at
varying altitudes. Oxygen molecules are further apart at higher altitudes because there is less pressure
to push them together.

Water moved through both straws and didn’t go Water went through both straws and when
back down the one with the valve, but did go pressure was released from the balloon the water
back down the one without the valve. went back down the straw back into the jar.

About 5 ML About 4 mL

Post-Lab Questions
1. What happened when you pressed on the balloon stretched over the jar? What does this
result represent?
Water came up through the straws. This represents blood pressure
2. What structure in this experiment mimics a heart valve?
The cut off neck of the balloon. that is taped to the straw.
3. How did the valve influence the experimental results? If possible, indicate the difference (in
mL) in water displaced with the valve versus without the valve. Does the valve enhance the
water flow, and why?
It determined how much liquid would leave the jar and stay out of the jar. So the amount of
blood that enters the heart will keep moving forward, as opposed to returning to the heart.
4. What other organs or body systems incorporate valves? How are they used?
Veins and the valves prevent backflow
Lymph ducts prevent backflow of fluid so that the lymph flows forward instead of backwards
