, Section 1: Experimental Learning
Question 1:
I selected the developmental context, the reason for choosing this context was the due fact that not a
lot of attention has been given to developmental assessments, most families with children who have
learning disabilities, or any type of developmental problem, don’t have the means or resources to
get assistance in these types of situations, families are also uninformed due to lack of availability of
these types of assessment services in South Africa. I gathered information to answer this question in
this section by researching articles, journals and using the textbook. I also found watching YouTube
videos on psychological assessments quite informative.
Question 2:
The developmental context can be described as the assessment or analysis to measure a child's
competencies with regards to their developmental process (Meisels & Atkins-Burnett, 1999).
Functions that can be assessed are physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of infants
and preschool children, therefore these components should be taken into account and assessments
should include these components, developmental measures take a holistic stance of child
development (Foxcroft & Roodt, 2019). The way assessments are done in this context can be
divided into screening and diagnostic measures, developmental screening can be described as a
short, quick summary of a child's developmental status, which can help to determine if the child is
at risk for problems with development, and diagnostic measures are in-depth, broad, holistic
measures to determine the existence, circumstances and severity of the problem in question
(Foxcroft & Roodt, 2019). People involved in this environment are parents, clinic nurses, trained
professionals, and teachers (Foxcroft & Roodt, 2019). Typical activities done in this context has to
do with motor coordination, language, verbal expression, and visual succession (Foxcroft & Roodt,
2019), School counsellors in Gauteng aided children who had behavioral and emotional problems
with the use of sand tray techniques (Richards et al., 2012). Developmental measures such as
Denver II, Draw-A-Person (DAP) test, School-readiness Evaluation by Trained Testers (SETT),
Griffiths scales, and McCarthy scales are just some measures involved in this context (Foxcroft &
Roodt, 2019).
Question 3:
Reasons for testing in this context is to measure a child's competencies with regards to their
developmental status (Meisels & Atkins-Burnett, 1999), to determine if the child is at risk for
problems with development, and to determine the existence, circumstances, and severity of the
problem in question (Foxcroft & Roodt, 2019). Taking the South African context into account it is
evident that children don't have proper access to the needed assets and opportunities and are thus
more vulnerable, and without assessments, these individuals might go without the proper
