, Section B: Living and non-living things
From the teaching ideas you gathered from your research on living and non-
living things, answer the following questions for your assignment:

1. Which of the (CAPS social science) big ideas described in unit 2 would be
appropriate to weave through your theme plan? Give reasons for your choice.

Regarding ‘content strand’, my curriculum topic falls under ‘matter and materials’.
This would mean that the key concepts or ‘big ideas’ for my specific topic would be
cause and effect and adaption.

I would say that cause and effect take place in the life cycle or ‘metamorphosis’ of a
butterfly because there is a process that the eggs and larva have to go through in
order to become a butterfly. The butterfly is the result or ‘effect’ of metamorphosis
and the entire life cycle of a butterfly is the cause. Metamorphosis is the cause of a
butterfly evolving.

Adaption also contributes to the life cycle of a butterfly as the eggs of a butterfly go
through changes in order to become a butterfly. In order for changes to happen-
adaption needs to happen. The newly hatched larva/caterpillar needs to adapt once
hatching from its eggshells, the caterpillar will need to adapt to a cocoon etc. without
adaption, no living organism would be able to survive.

The life cycle of a butterfly fits well with ‘adaption’ due to the fact that many changes
take place in the process. Changing from an egg to larva, into a pupa and then an
adult butterfly all requires adaption.

2. Plan an inquiry-based theme using the seven-phase cycle as described in
unit 3 by Van Uum et al (2016). You must use the blank template in Addendum
A which is also available on myUnisa. Read what is required in each section of
the lesson plan carefully before filling it in.
