● A research problem refers to a difficulty which a researcher or a scientific
community or an industry or a government organization or a society experiences.
It may be a theoretical or a practical situation. It calls for a thorough
understanding and possible solution.
● Research provides basis for many government policies. For example, research on
the needs and desires of the people and on the availability of revenues to meet the
needs helps a government to prepare a budget.
● It is the fountain of knowledge and provides guidelines for solving problems.
● Only through research inventions can be made; for example, new and novel
phenomena and processes such as superconductivity and cloning have been
discovered only through research.

● Research leads to a new style of life and makes it delightful and glorious.
● It leads to the identification and characterization of new materials, new living
things, new stars, etc.
● Mathematical and logical research on business and industry optimizes the
problems in them.
● Social research helps find answers to social problems. They explain social
phenomena and seek solutions to social problems.

However: the scientific activity of collecting and analysing data into a
phenomenon with a view to gaining a deeper and better understanding into
, that phenomenon; however, this is done by following universally accepted
procedures or methods.
SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY: For research to be scientific it must meet certain requirements:
Has to be objective meaning bias should be absent, based on confirmation of
facts,transparency needs to exist as the research is no secret.
Repeatability – should be possible for someone else to repeat the steps. if they
follow the steps; same or similar results should come about.
Operationalisation of definitions/concepts – whatever concept of research
should be consistent throughout the process.
Must be publishable by sharing the findings with interested stakeholders or the
general public, Mo magic or secret. Thesis and dissertations are released with the
purpose of others reading these academic research findings.

Raw data/information is merely collected and not manipulated.
Primary (research that you conduct and it belongs to you) or secondary (someone
else did it) data.
Analysis is making sense of that data, by manipulation.
