TMN3705 ASSIGNMENT 1

Activity 1.1
What is your experience as a learner in a:
Science class- In a science class we learn more about nature, people, trees and things
we see in our daily basis. We do more experiments, and I get to learn more on different
kinds of things on planet, how we can grow trees, how people and animal lives. We
learn on combinations of chemicals and what happens when chemical reaction takes
place.
Technology class- In a technology class we learn about calculating drawings, types of
forces, we learn about different types of bridges, and different ways of making bridges
stable and strong. We have also learnt about an important way to develop and
communicate your ideas in Technology, we also started drawing freehand sketches,
then learnt about drawing one face of an object in two dimensions and Finally, we learnt
how to draw an object showing three dimensions.
Bad experience- Everything we do in science we have to do an experiment, meaning
we have to go home and do some tree cutting, or bottle finding.
Bad experience- You always have to concentrate 100% because if you miss one step
of doing a drawing or materials you need for building a bridge and then your whole
process will be in vein.

2. Yes a lot of things have changed, in our times we used books and used to go to
libraries for researches and homework’s, but now the learners can sit at home and do
their researches on the internet using their phones and laptops. Now schools also have
laboratory and computer rooms where they can conduct experiments and researches
without having to go to the library.
But Science and Technology in and of itself won’t change, but merely adapt to the
times. It will always be subjects that triggers the spark of curiosity in learners and
encourage them to ask more questions and calculate and draw up their own
conclusions surrounding problems presented to them.
What does this suggests?
This suggest that it will be easier for me as a technology and science teacher, because I
can give learners a research work, and also use a projector to show them visuals
because most of the learners learn through seeing not only from hearing. They
understand things better when you show them. Learners can now go do their
researches then come back to class then we discuss what they have researched, and I
teach them based on what they know already or on what they have seen already this
makes things easier for everyone in class even those who take long to understand will
get to understand quickly.
The teacher is also more responsible for the learners ‘engagement in the subject than
anyone could think of. If a teacher shows passion and energy towards the subject, the
learners are more likely to be influenced and always do the right things in class.

What does this suggest about you as a Natural Science and Technology teacher?
A Science and Technology teacher must always be flexible and innovative. In order to
make the subject as optimally interesting and engaging as possible, the teacher would
have to come up with methods and ideas in order to keep the learners captivated in the
subject and to encourage them to participate in the activities and assignments. Thinking
outside the box and creating representatives of an assignment using every-day-life
scenarios is always something that brings the lesson into a perspective which most
everyone can relate to and form an understanding around. The teacher is also more
responsible for the learners’ engagement in the subject than one would suspect. If a
teacher shows passion and energy towards the subject, the learners are more likely to
be influenced to also feel some excitement towards it.

Picture 1.
What I see here is leaners sitting down in a class and the teacher is teaching while
writing some notes on the board, the teacher is engaging with the learners and you can
see that she poses questions to the learners while teaching, has all the learners
intrigued and concentrated. The learners have stood up from their desks with their
chairs to sit in front with the teacher so they can be next to her while they are having a
discussion.
Picture 2.
In this picture the teacher is showing leaners, an experiment, it is a classroom
experiment. The learners are very much involved this experiment, you can see that by
how they are observing the teacher. Learners who are involved in classroom
experiments can be asked to make predictions and to reflect upon their observations.
The teacher has collected all the material he is going to need for the experiment, as you
can see the learners are wearing glasses and have their books with them. What is
depicted in this picture is what we call experiential learning, learners learn by doing, so
the teachers has created an experience for them to see what he is teaching in action.
Picture 3

In this picture the learners are having a group discussion, seems like the teacher has
given them work to do as a group, now they are having a discussion, sharing ideas and
enjoying working together. The learners are in a Buzz Group- these involves learner’s
engaging in short, informal discussions, often in response to a particular topic or
question. At a transitional moment in the class, have learners turn to 1-6 neighbors to
discuss any difficulties in understanding, answer a prepared question, define or give
examples of key concepts, or speculate on what will happen next in the class. This is
what we call cooperative learning, as learner’s learner effectively when they are working
together, in this way they also earn critical thinking skills, communication skills and problem
solving skills.
