, COMMUNICATION PROCESS

Communication in agricultural extension is the process by which information on agriculture is transferred from the sources

to the receiver (farmers) for the purpose of changing behaviour towards effecting a desired result. The information is

transferred through different channels. Communication in agricultural extension work is essential to/create awareness in

the rural people. Without proper communication, it may be difficult for the farmers to find a solution to their agricultural

problems.

Some definitions of communication

Berelson and Steiner- Communication as the transmission ofinfo1mation, ideas, emotions, skills with

symbols, words, pictures, figures and graphs.

Rogers ..:... Communication is the process of transmitting ideas, information, and attitudes from a source to a

receiver for the purpose of influencing with intent.

Little (1980) defines communication as the process by which information is passed -between individuals or

organizations by means of previously agreed symbols

Effective communication between extension workers and the farmers is necessary in the adoption of

agricultural innovations. The communication process is also important to change values
- and attitude of the

farmers towards techniques of farming. Through communication process extension workers are able to pass

information to farmers and farmers on the other hand to channel their problems to extension agents. In this

way communication provides two way process of passing information.
