, 1. Introduction :

Before we begin we must look at what is Borderline Personality Disorder.BPD is a
illness whereby a pattern of varying moods, self-image and behavior is created. This will
often result in impulsive actions and problems with relationships and behavioural
problems. This is a mental health disorder that will have a impact on the way you think,
feel about yourself and others and the causing of problems, difficulty managing
emotions often resulting in a pattern of unstable and failed relationships.
Hoffman (2007).

Humans with BPD often develops an intense fear of abandonment and instability. This
is often accompanied by a intolerance of being alone. It is however this inappropriate
anger, impulsiveness and mood swings may often lead to you pussing others away
leading the way to lost and broken relationships.Oldman (2009).

This enduring/ongoing pattern will eventually lead to clinically significant distress of
impairment in social and other areas of functioning. Speranza et al. (2012)
The illness is marked by severe emotional dysregulation, mood swings that may and
can last for hours and even days, that can result in depression, impulsivity, unstable
relationships.

Borderline Personality Disorder is common under adolescents. There are many books
written about this topic. There has long been a debate regarding the existence of BPD in
the adolescence group. BPD in adolescents comprises of an internal or spiritual
component or identity disturbance,stress-related paranoya, chronic feelings of
emptiness and efferts to avoid abandonment. This can then lead to impulsivity, suicidal
tendencies and even self-mutilating.There is also a increased sensitivety to their
surroundings and a hyperreactivity as response to it. The personality disorder problem
in society cannot be ignored in society today. With an increase in stress and
overexpectance about the performance ability of adolescents leads to an increase in
hospitalized adolescents. The intensity, duration and degree of the symptoms fluctuate
depending on the factors. Fonagy et al.(2008)

, 2. DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for personality Disorders
What is the DSM-5 diagnostic creteria for personality disorder ?
This is a manual form for assessment and the diagnosis of the various mental disorders
but it does not include any guidelines for the treatment of any of the mental disorders.A
accurate diagnosis is the first step toward being able to treat the condition. Chanen et
al. (2004).
The DSM-5 criteria makes it possible for us to diagnose personal disorders. People
need to be assessed with regard to their long term patterns of functioning over enough
time and across different situations. Because not all humans are the same we have to
separate personality traits of individuals and the possible symptoms of Personality
disorders. These symptoms generally appear after certain stressors, traumatic
experiences and short term mental states like mood swings, anxiety disorders , and
various forms of substance abuse. All of these are common amoung adolescents. For a
more accurate diagnoses there needs to be more than one interview and making sure
that all the relefant information is at hand to assist in making a general diagnosis.
Becker et al. (2006)

According to Blaise Aguirre, MD (2012).Psychiatric Times the following criteria must be
met for a diagnosis can be made:

a) The must be a lasting (over time) pattern of inner experience and behaviour that
deviates from the norm taking into account the individual’s background and
culture.
b) This lasting pattern must be inflexible and prevalent across a broad range of
social and personal situations.
c) This pattern leads to a situation or feeling of distress or loss of social , work and
other areas of normal functioning.
d) This pattern must be long lasting and the beginning of it can usually be traced
back to adolescence and early childhood. American Psychiatric Association,
(2013).
