RESPONSES

Question 1 [10]

Provide a summary of the main points from the ILO policy note that focus on
occupational health and safety. Remember to references all the sources you consult.

Write or type your answer here:
According to the ILO policy on occupational health and safety, “protecting workers
and their families from the risk of infection needs to be a top priority”. This includes
health risks from COVID-19, but also the financial security. Various measures of
protection in the “workplace and across communities should be introduced and
strengthened, requiring large-scale public support and investment” (ILO Monitor 1 st
Edition, 2020).

The ILO policy also suggests the following be put in place in the workplace to ensure
the protection of workers. As put forward by ILO Monitor 1 st Edition, these include:
1. Strengthening OSH measures
2. Adapting work arrangements (e.g. teleworking)
3. Preventing discrimination and exclusion
4. Providing health access for all
5. Expand access to paid leave

Question 2 [10]

Which experts should be involved in implementing the policy changes recommended by
the ILO in the policy note? Remember to references all the sources you consult.

Write or type your answer here:
The experts that should be involved in implementing the policy changes are called:
“The Committee of Experts” — this committee was established in 1926 to “examine
the growing number of government reports on ratified Conventions” (International
Labour Organization, 1996-2021). Currently it consists of 20 distinguished jurists
chosen by the Governing Body for three-year terms. These “experts” are all from
different “geographic regions, legal systems and cultures” (International Labour
Organization, 1996-2021). The Committee of Experts’ role is to offer an unbiased and
methodological assessment of the “application of international labour standards in ILO
member States” (International Labour Organization, 1996-2021).

Question 3 [10]

Explain the importance of organisational policy and how the ILO recommendations slots
in with it. Remember to references all the sources you consult.

Write or type your answer here:
Organizational policies are important because they provide workers with training and
corrective feedback that helps them improve in their daily performance and conduct.
At some point, however, it is important to step back and trust employees to do their
jobs. Well-written policies convey to employees what is expected of them (Bianca,
2018). The ILO recommendations slot in with this notion in that it gives
recommendations on regulations and correct methods of conduct. By having these
set rules and regulations in place, the recommended policy makes it easier to deal
with the COVID-19 pandemic within organizations, minimizing the risk and costs while
giving the necessary support to the employees.
