,What is a gene?
• Gene = section of DNA that contains the coded information for
making polypeptides or functional RNA
• Gene locus = location of the gene on a chromosome

• There are 20 amino acids
• There need to be enough different combinations of bases to code f

• It couldn’t be one base coding for one amino acid because this wou
only make 4 combinations
• It couldn’t be 2 bases per amino acid because this would make only

• It had to be 3 – this made 64 combinations
• Therefore, most amino acids have multiple triplets that can code fo
