Ambition and power in Macbeth
The themes of ambition and power are portrayed many times in Macbeth and is very crucial to
the entire play as these themes lead to important events. Ambition and power are linked to one
another and power becomes dominant and evil if there is ambition within achieving it. The
ambition in Macbeth is done through Macbeth and it Leads him to do many evil things, along with
the power of corruption. As for the main power, it can easily be said that lady Macbeth and the 3
witches are the ones with the most power, specifically over Macbeth’s life and are the pushing
force behind his ambitions.
In act 1, scene 3, after meeting the witches when he speaks to himself aside, he says “ my
thoughts, whose murder is yet but fantastical, shakes so my single state of man that function.”
Now the thought of ambition have slowly started but very effectively getting the idea through his
brain. Now the idea of being king has been planted into his brain, it fascinates him, as he
mentions “yet but fantastical” . He knows that it is wrong to murder as he uses the word but uses
the word “yet”, and continues on thinking of possibilities. He further says “shakes so my single
man of function” showing that the idea is fantastically shaking to the core of possibly excitement
and wonder if being the strongest person in Scotland .'
In act 1 scene 5, after lady Macbeth has learnt about the prophecy , she is more ambitious then
Macbeth to make him king. She says ,” yet I do fear thy nature. It is too full o’th” milk of human
kindness. “ Over here lady Macbeth’s ambition shows as she immediately wants action to occur
and her husband king. She fears his nature of being kind and innocent as she says “milk of
human kindness” milk can show the natural characteristics that a mother might have for a baby,
as being compassionate and innocent. She thinks it’s his weakness and confronts it.
In act 1 scene 7, birth power and ambition is shown by lady Macbeth when she is talking with him
about Duncan, she says “we fail? But screen not your courage to the sticking place. And we’ll not
fail. When Duncan is asleep, where to the rather shall his days hard journey” she shows her
ambition through her immediate plans to kill Duncan and her belief in them succeeding and not
failing . She also portrays her power with her already in plan ideas to have him killed. She
adamants Macbeth for not being brave enough. She uses a metaphor of “screw “ and “sticking
