, INTRODUCTION

In recent years, there has been a great deal of research done on eating
disorders (Pedersen et al, 2018). Eating disorders are multifaceted illnesses that are
influenced by individuals' personality characters and socio-cultural influences
(Pedersen et al, 2018). This paper seeks to examine the multi-dimensional view of
eating disorders, involving the extent to which socio-cultural values influence eating
disorders overall. (Douglas et al., 2019) describe eating disorders as being manifested
by abnormal eating habits, cognitive distortions related to food and weight, and these
are usually accompanied by depression, anxiety, and emotional instability. Socio-
cultural values are major factors in eating disorders (Izydorcyk & Sitnik-Warchulska,
2018).

According to (Izydorcyk & Sitnik-Warchulska, 2018), socio-cultural values
are the beliefs, traditions, and behaviours that shape the decisions we make and the
actions we take every day. Societal values have a huge impact on our well-being as
well as our sense of self and how we view the world around us (Izydorcyk & Sitnik-
Warchulska, 2018). Socio-cultural values are associated with a higher risk of eating
disorders and other effects associated with the diagnosis such as depression, according
to (Douglas et al, 2019). Women and particularly young girls have been found to be
more susceptible to eating disorders (Izydorcyk & Sitnik-Warchulska, 2018).
(Guildinger et al, 2020) note that the disorder of overeating or undereating is common
to both men and women worldwide. These findings suggest that eating disorders have
been relatively understudied in men. This review was primarily motivated by body
dissatisfaction, or negative body image as well as internalizations of sociocultural
values as well as its association with psychological outcomes such as eating disorders.
