2.3 The school context

Name: Hoërskool Hercules

Where: Pretoria

Type (urban well resourced, rural well resources, private well resourced, FET college,
urban less well resourced, rural less well resourced, private less well resourced):

Urban less well resourced

Explain your choice:
The school is situated in the west of Pretoria and 60 percent of the parents are non-working
because of poverty, due to this the school does not receive much school fees and the help from
the department does not cover all the costs.

Fee paying or non-fee-paying? Fee paying
Number of learners: +- 1000
Number of teachers: 80

Resources:

 Textbooks
 Projectors
 Laptops

Community in which the school is situated:

 Daspoort

Reflection: Why is the school context important? How would this influence your task as a
teacher?

 It is important to understand the school context to know what resources you have to
use, so that if you need resources that the school does not have, you can either
borrow from a neighbouring schools, so that the learners will benefit when you are
teaching them. To have a good school context it will help you to build a more positive
attitude for the learners towards the school.
 A teacher must always understand where the learners come from to understand the
learners better. The teachers must understand the internal and external influences on
the school and on the learners. By knowing the school context, you as an educator
will understand the behaviour of learner’s better and will know how to support them

, and motivate them.
