Task 1: Case study
It is within the realm of existential traditions to see the opportunities and possibilities
that human life possesses while taking into account its limits and tragic elements.
There is an overarching belief that we will face things that are difficult and tragic
though inherent in our existence is our freedom. This freedom however comes with
responsibility. There are 6 main propositions within the existentialist approach, the
two that Linda struggles with most are those of freedom and responsibility
andStriving for identity and relationships with others (Corey, 2017).
In my opinion the 6 propositions are interconnected and in challenging the core
tenets of one proposition you will in some way affect the others in an ultimately
positive way (Corey, 2017).
Freedom and responsibility
One of the core tenets of existentialism and the proposition of freedom and
responsibility is that it is inherent in the human condition that we have the freedom to
choose as we please and in turn, based on the choices we make, we build our own
realities. Within this proposition we see three core values namely: 1)the freedom to
become; 2) the capacity to reflect; 3) the capacity to act (Corey, 2017).
In our freedom we are not free of the responsibility of the choices we make though
we can reflect and change our actions and choices. Existentialists believe that we
are constantly faced with choices about what kind of person we become and that we
will never be finished as there is always the option to make a different choice. A
caveat of the implicit freedom we have as humans is that not assuming responsibility
can have negative effects such as living inauthentically which is linked to our
tendency to want to escape our freedom and responsibility. Seeing your person as
inflexible or static gives us the opportunity to deny that we had a choice, we fail to
accept our responsibility and often begin to believe that what happens in our lives is
the work of external forces. If we do manage to avoid choice, freedom and its
responsibility we eventually become laden with Existential guilt for having avoided
the necessary commitments and living an inauthentic life. This guilt can be used to
