HOW TO USE THE RESEARCH REVIEW INVENTORY (revised)
The review inventory consists of a number of items, numbered sequentially from 1 up to 58.
RATING SCALE :
Items should be reviewed and rated on a three-point rating scale from 1 to 3.
The ratings are defined as follows:
1: Absent, incorrect, or completely wrong.
2: Only partially addressed. It does not attain the item requirement or criteria.
3: Sufficiently up to standard in terms of the item criteria.
Every relevant item should be reviewed and rated on this three-point scale (1 to 3).
KEEP A RECORD OF YOUR ANSWERS
Use the R.R.I. (revised): Review Log to document and keep a record of your ratings.
REVIEWER COMMENTS AND THE FEEDBACK REPORT
Each rating is associated with general comments.
For example, suppose a reviewer reviews a particular proposal and gives a rating of “3” for the clarification of
the proposed study. The general comment would be: “The research question is formulated. A research question
is derived from the research issue.”
IMPORTANT NOTES
Remember, where the item criterion is not explicitly addressed then allocate a low rating (1). Good academic
writing is clear and transparent. If a reader needs to guess at whether an issue has been implemented and
addressed or not, then the writing is neither clear nor transparent. Only give a high rating (3) if the item criteria
have been explicitly addressed.
TIPS:
*To complete the log, read the Rating Item
(R.R.I) column, refer back to the article, and
then add in your rate (1,2,3) to your blank
log accordingly.
*When you complete the MCQ online, you
will only have to add in your rating of 1, 2 or
3. No comments/ justifications will be
necessary.

B. THE ABSTRACT OR SUMMARY
Abstract of the article:
Abstract
“The authors explored the lived experiences of traumatisation among active Black military personnel from a
psychodynamic (Object Relations) framework. The broad aim of this study was to explore traumatisation
and subsequent long-term undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the presenting behaviour and
overall psychological functioning of Black members in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
N=9 members of the SANDF participated in the study. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach
and a phenomenological research design. Data was obtained using individual semi-structured interviews,
with IPA as a method of analysis. The findings indicated that participants lived experience of traumatisation
is a chronic state of psychic, occupational and relational re-traumatisation. Continuous traumatisation that
reactivated past unresolved traumas was characterised by annihilation anxiety, psychic numbing and
repression. Phenomenologically overall functional paralysis was evidenced in chronic psychological
deterioration, which manifests in irreversible damage to character, with cognitive and relational deficits linked
to unresolved long-term traumatisation. These findings highlight a need to incorporate psychotherapeutic
models focused on integrative meaning making of psychic distress for adaptive functioning of SANDF members,
suffering from long-term undiagnosed PTSD syndrome from pre- integration armed forces combat
experiences” (Sibanda, et al., 2021, pp. 87).
