a.) Describe in your own words the following concepts and give one example of each:
i.) Multicultural Education:
Multicultural education is an approach designed to change the environment so that different
kinds of groups of individuals, including ethnic groups, women and learners with special
needs, can experience educational equality and academic parity.
ii.) Xenophobia:
Is described as a hatred or a fear for people of foreign origin (a country other than your
own). Xenophobia is characterized by a negative attitude towards foreigners – a dislike, fear
or hatred.
iii.) Assimilation:
This can be defined as when the values, norms and language of the dominant social group
should be adapted by the minority group in a society. It basically means that the minority
groups in society must conform to and adopt the value systems, norms and language of the
majority and the dominant social group.
b.) i.) Describe any TWO different social groups of learners that exist in the school where you
teach or know.
- Language groups
- Sports groups
ii.) In your opinion do the two groups enjoy the same quality of education?
The part that impedes the most on the quality of education that the learners receive is the
language part of the education. Because not everyone shares the same home language – it
immediately creates strain on communication and understanding, especially between
teachers and learners (as well as the learners from the two different groups).
Something that I have witnessed, is where the one language group consisted of learners
with Tswana as their home language, but were evidently forced to receive their education in
English – which they struggled to understand and, therefore, had an exceedingly damaging
effect on the quality of education that they were receiving, because English wasn’t even the
first language of the teachers giving the subjects.
c.) Explain how a teacher could promote prejudice reduction in multicultural education.
Strategies:
- Assign leadership, responsibility and tasks equitably in the classroom.
- Eliminate segregated social and play areas in and around the classroom.
- Avoid grouping on the basis of gender, race, language or any other dividing factor.
- Encourage boys and girls to participate in non-traditional activities.
