existential models of therapy, it will also touch on key theorists of each modality.
Additionally, it will elaborate on key concepts of each therapy, some similarities and
differences of each client-therapist relationship in the psychoanalytic and existential
modalities. Furthermore, it will indicate similarities and differences of the therapeutic goals
of each modality as well as strengths and weaknesses. According to Viktor Frankl (1992, pp.
113) “What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific
meaning of a person's life at a given moment”.
Brief Historical Backgrounds and Key Theorists of Psychoanalytic Therapy
Psychoanalysis was developed by Sigmund Freud during the Victorian period, thus
has more emphasis on the role of sex (Moore et al., 2017). Freud developed the
psychoanalytic therapy model throughout an estimated 47 years and was influenced by his
teacher Ernst Willhelm Brucke, a world-famous scientist (Moore et al., 2017). According to
Corey et al. (2017), Psychoanalytic therapy focuses on what motivates behaviours, as well as
our basic characters, and on drawing our unconscious material to the consciousness.
The main theorist of psychoanalytic therapy is Sigmund Freud, who developed many
of the concepts and practices that are used in psychoanalytic therapy (Corey et al., 2017).
Other key theorists in the psychoanalytic model of therapy added to Freud’s original beliefs
and practices such as Carl Jung.
Carl Jung was a colleague of Freud’s, valuing many of the contributions Freud made
and even contributed theories on dream analysis as well as unconsciousness (Corey et al.,
2017). Erikson and Schlein (1995, pp. 1–15) talk about the contributions made by Erik
Erikson, going on to say that “He became a psychoanalyst who helped all of us to see more
