1.1a
A professional teacher is one who carries themselves in a way that shows etiquette
and dignity. They treat their students equally and never depict favouritism in the
classroom, or on the school ground. A professional teacher takes initiative and does
on-going assessments to track the progress of their students. They work on being
adaptable and flexible by changing up lessons when students are falling behind,
therefore focusing on student’s problem areas; or if the students are finding the work
too easy, setting challenges. They use creative ideas so that their students take an
interest in the classroom and develop a passion for their schoolwork. As important as
it is for the students to work on bettering themselves, a professional teacher will
involve themselves in workshops etc to better themselves as a teacher; there is
always room for growth as no one can be perfect in a profession.
1.1b
A professional teacher can identify with each individual in the class and focus on the
students learning the work, which is taught to them, rather than teaching them a
‘syllabus’ by book. They show relevance to what they teach so that their students do
not lose interest during a lesson. By helping their students to develop a passion for
their schoolwork, the teacher learns what inspires them, promoting learning goals in
the classroom. A teacher is open to learning new things, realizing that there is
always room for improvement. They boost their learners’ confidence in the
classroom by using different techniques, hence their students feel comfortable to
engage with fellow classmates and to share ideas with others. An enthusiastic
teacher creates a positive environment for the students to work in. A professional
teacher communicates with their students, work colleagues and parents as it is vital
to improve performance in the workplace. Having patience, finesse to work with new
technology, a good imagination, team building, a good reputation, great
communication skills, new and fun teaching methods, getting involved in the school,
having good planning and time management, and being adaptable are all
characteristics of a professional teacher.
1.1c
Professional teachers should have a positive impact on every learner in their class. A
teacher acts as a confidant for every student in their class and many look up to them
as a role model. Teachers are the main contributors to the classroom environment;
which has a great impact on the discipline and functionality of their students. Having
a good body language and enthusiasm during lessons and the school day is very
important for a teacher to portray because it has a great impact on the learners and
their behaviour in response to the teacher’s mood. Being an enthusiastic teacher
also betters a student’s self-esteem because of the increased motivation which is
portrayed by the teacher.

Assignment 2: Learning unit 2
Teachers are protectors in the eyes of children and therefore a teacher needs to be
willing to have a good listening ear and patience so that children can trust them.
Teachers should try to speak to their students directly so that each child knows that
they have a relationship with their teacher.
Many children are shy and find it difficult to speak out confidently in class; teachers
must encourage their students in all aspects in the classroom, especially to engage
with others. Allowing children to help out with tasks in the classroom, like reading a
story to the class or holding up a poster board as the teacher explains the detail
which it entails, is a good way of getting them to engage, and in future activities they
will feel more comfortable to do so. After having the teacher as a support system
when helping with these simple tasks, they will be able to preform these tasks alone
and with much more confidence.
When a teacher puts themselves on their students’ levels and ‘normalizes’ their
mistakes, it helps their students understand that we are all human and that everyone
makes mistakes. They will realize that that is why we are at school; to learn and
better our mistakes. This understanding helps students to not feel belittled and they
can work much better and in a ‘healthy environment’. Rewarding good behaviour and
work is a good way to motivate children to always try their best and that good things
come out of working hard.
